The Block Island Round-the-Block Triathlon begins on August 31st, 2003 at 10:00 AM

1/2 mile swim
7 mile beach run
10.5 mile road bike

All racers to meet at the New Harbor channel starting point near the Coast Guard station no later than 9:30 AM on the 31st. Be sure to lock your bike up at the Fred Benson Public Beach Pavilion prior to arrival at the race start. Volunteers will be on hand to help shuttle racers from the Beach Pavilion to the race start. There will be a brief race orientation at the race start. As in previous years, the start is beyond the end of Champlain Farm Road near the Coast Guard station.

Signing Up
All those participating in the race should sign up prior to the race online or sign up at the main transition area or at the New Harbor channel starting point. There will be a required orientation session at 9:30 AM on the 31st of August at the New Harbor channel starting point. For planning purposes we ask that all participants sign up on the website in advance of the race. Sign up will be closed 45 minutes before the start of the race. All racers must begin the day at the TBD starting point.

Entry Fee
The entry fee is $20.00. Payment for participation must be made in cash at the check in before the start of the race. No advance payment is accepted.

Legal Wavier
All racers must sign a legal wavier form prior to the race. Please bring that with you to check-in. Waivers will be on hand at the race start as well. This is a compete at your own risk event. The government of the Town of New Shoreham is not involved in this race in any way.

Logistics
  • All racers must begin the event at the New Harbor channel starting point and attend a 9:30 AM orientation.
  • Participants must provide race organizers with a bag containing running shoes, sox and any other materials to be moved to the transition area. The bag should be clearly marked with your name, number and age.
  • Prior to the race, participants must drop their bikes off at the transition area at the Fred Benson Public Beach Pavilion.

Course
  • The course will begin on the Charleston Beach side of the New Harbor breakwater, south of the Channel to New Harbor. From the northern edge of Charleston beach participants will swim out and around the southern breakwater, into the channel, across the channel and exit the water on the north side of the channel onto the beach at Bean's point. On the beach swimmers will find their shoes at the run transition area at Bean Point.
  • Runners are to run below the high water line northward, to north point then turn southward toward the North Point parking lot. Do not turn southward until you've reached the northern-most point of land beneath the high water mark.
  • Runners are to continue to the Fred Benson Public Beach Pavilion where racers are to transition to their bikes.
  • Once on your bike, go left out of the Beach Pavilion parking lot onto Corn Neck Road and continue through town, past the statue of Rebecca and up Spring Street. Continue up Spring Street past Fresh Pond to Cherry Hill road. Turn left onto Cherry Hill Road, right at Coonemus onto West Side Road and continue past the cemetery, right at the bottom of the hill to the Police station. Turn left onto Beach Avenue at the Police station to Corn Neck Road, Turn left onto Corn neck road and back to the Beach Pavilion. Water and refreshments will be provided at the finish.
  • Any swim related gear left at the run transition area will be brought to the race finish.
Water
Water stations will be found roughly every 3 1/2 miles during the run. There will be no water stations during the ride. Racers may opt to run with their own water and will be expected to ride with at least one filled water bottle. Water will be available to fill bottles at the Fred Benson Public Beach Pavilion prior to the race.

Benefit
Proceeds from the race will go toward the Southeast Lighthouse restoration project.
